Bluebeam crashes or goes 'Not Responding' after a few minutes of use

Bluebeam opens fine but crashes or freezes after working for a while — usually a sign of memory exhaustion, file corruption, or a runaway background process.

Critical — Read Before Proceeding

If Bluebeam crashes and you had unsaved markups, check the auto-recovery folder: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Bluebeam Software\Revu\20\AutoSave. Bluebeam may have saved a recovery copy there. Open it immediately before doing anything else.

Step-by-step fix · 7 steps

  1. 1

Open Task Manager immediately when Bluebeam slows down (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and go to the Performance → Memory tab. If memory usage is at or above 85–90% total, Bluebeam is being starved of RAM. The solution is to reduce what else is running — see step 2.

  2. 2

Close everything except Bluebeam: Each open Chrome tab uses 50–200 MB of RAM. Teams with video on uses 300–500 MB. Outlook uses 200–400 MB. Close all of these before working with large drawings. After closing them, wait 60 seconds for Windows to reclaim the memory, then return to Bluebeam.

  3. 3

Check disk space — low disk causes crashes: Go to Settings → System → Storage and check the C: drive free space. If it is below 5 GB free, Windows cannot use disk space as virtual memory (overflow RAM), which causes crashes in memory-hungry apps like Bluebeam. Delete files from Downloads, empty the Recycle Bin, and clear temporary files.

  4. 4

Disable auto-save if it is causing freezes: Go to Edit → Preferences → General → Auto Save. If auto-save is set to every 1–2 minutes on a very large file, it can cause regular brief freezes. Change it to every 10 minutes while working on large files, and save manually (Ctrl + S) when you reach natural break points.

  5. 5

Check if a specific action triggers the crash: Note what you were doing immediately before the crash (zooming in, pasting a markup, switching pages, printing). If a specific action always triggers it, the issue is reproducible and this information is critical for IT — write it down and raise a support ticket with those exact steps.

  6. 6

Run a Quick Repair of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables: Bluebeam relies on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries. If these are corrupted, Bluebeam will crash intermittently. Go to Settings → Apps → search for 'Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable' → click each one → Modify → Repair. This does not remove anything but refreshes the runtimes.

  7. 7

As a last resort — uninstall and reinstall Bluebeam Revu 20: Contact IT/Admin before doing this — they will provide the installer and licence key. Do not download Bluebeam from the internet yourself as this may install the wrong version.

Tip

Bluebeam is a 32-bit application in version 20, which means it cannot use more than ~3.5 GB of RAM by itself, regardless of how much RAM the laptop has. This is a known architectural limit — working with smaller files or fewer open files simultaneously is the main workaround.
